A fascinating make over of a country home by ABM Interior Architecture, brings in a beatific, cosy bungalow nestling in the Himalayan foothills, in Dehradun
Tucked away in the quiet, sylvan surroundings, with unending views of the rush of greenery and the mountains, redolent with fresh air and birdsong, stands the Sobti residence in its refurbished form: a robust, British countryside bungalow complete with sloping roof; flowing brick arches with white trims, and a generous garden in bloom.
Location: Dwhradun, India
Completed: July 2015
Design Team: Riyaz Himany, Subhash Tamane and Latika Amersey
The existing bungalow was revamped completely and its entire facade overhauled to redress issues of water leakage. What stands is a classic construction evocative of a British bungalow. A higher roof shaped with locally available slate creates a grand first impression of the property. The rambling garden, the spiffy white columns in the porch and the sweeping valley view build up the perfect home, in an idyllic setting. Huge bay windows bring the verdant outside inside.
The living room spells an airy, fresh charm with its cosy couches and logs of wood burning and crackling cheerfully in the stone clad fireplace. Antique light fittings, ornate fans and wooden rafters on the ceiling set the mood for colonial luxury. The dining area stands cleverly earmarked midst a hush of rose pink walls, wallpapered ceiling and an eight-seater dining table, with picture perfect view through the full length windows. A sense of calm runs through the decor palette, unifying the quiet tastes of the residents with all modern comforts, wrapped up in a suave British style.
Moving up, the two guest bedrooms arrive in cheerful hues and fitted with contemporary comforts including a flatscreen and an air conditioner. The master bedroom, with its four poster bed, is a chic rendition in a quiet, restrained palette of ivory, beige and a splash of floral violets. The wooden flooring running throughout the house brings with it a rich infusion of warmth and luxury. The bungalow offers a discreet, separate entrance for the service staff and domestic quarters, thereby retaining the privacy of the residents. Cosy, functional and stylish. The Sobti residence stands apart as a textured fusion of old world charm and modern comforts.
