The Layered Office

Client's brief: To restore the façade of the building and revamp the interior of the office building.

The Jindal family engaged ABM to restore the façade of their headquarters in Bhikaji Cama Place, Delhi, and to completely renovate the interiors. ABM had designed the interiors 20+ years ago. The building includes a basement, ground floor, and three upper floors. Three companies within the Jindal Group share this space.

While ABM enjoyed the design process, executing this complex office renovation was a significant challenge and one of the firm's most demanding projects to date.

Completed: January 2024

Design Team: Yogesh Kachole, Kayum Shaikh, Shweta Gurav, Sageer Muckba, Dipesh Variya

Area: 90,000 sq. ft.

Photographer: Suryan/Dang

ABM's primary task was to repair the over 20-year-old building façade, which was clad in Dholpur stone. This involved comprehensive repair work, waterproofing, and the installation of new windows, curtain walls, and lighting. Another challenge for ABM was to accommodate the office space needs of all three companies within the existing structure and to update all services.

The office is arranged around a large central courtyard featuring grand sculptures by Subodh Gupta. Various vantage points into this courtyard are available throughout the office space.

Entrance

Visitors enter the office under a new canopy, leading into an open-air courtyard. The flooring is new black granite, and the main entrance façade features a new revolving door. The reception area has been updated with a stainless-steel desk, providing a view of the central courtyard behind it. A spiral staircase connects all the floors from this area.

Workstations

The workstations are customized with stainless steel trims. Despite the low ceiling height in this area, efforts were made to keep it bright. Instead of traditional carpeting, hard vinyl flooring was used. The pinboard fabric color matches the color scheme of each company. Large structural columns in the middle are clad in Corian with a twisted hexagonal design, and green planters are integrated with the storage units. Meeting Rooms

Meeting rooms are distributed across all floors and, although used by different companies, they share a consistent design. They feature fabric paneling with stainless steel strips, Corian-finished meeting tables with storage, and TVs concealed within black back-painted glass panels.

Cabins

The cabins are designed uniformly, focusing on simplicity, practicality, and functionality, with ample storage. Each cabin offers a view of either the central courtyard or the exterior road.

Board Room & Lounge

On the top floor, ABM designed the directors' lounge, a meeting room seating 12 or more, and a large boardroom seating over 20, with a terrace view. A covered glass canopy connects the lounge to the boardroom.
